February 8, 2019

Millennials would rather be in debt than not have an opportunity to be adventurous, independent, and to find novelty and authenticity in their experiences.

Taiwo & Kehinde

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, but now residing in Oakland, CA Taiwo and Kehinde both work in tech and enjoy traveling to refresh every once in a while. Though they mildly travelled as children, they recall their favorite memory and biggest travel as “moving from the East Coast to start our new life on the opposite side of the country. Lots of fear of the unknown, and risk, but we knew we were called to make the big move and start on a new journey together”

TES: Why do you like travelling?

TK: Traveling gives us an opportunity to experience varying cultures, learn about other people and what matters to them. It gives us the opportunity to live life from a different perspective. It is relaxing, exciting and a great way to press pause on our day-to-day life. That is why we enjoy it so much and try to do it as often as possible.

TES: Your best travel tip/advice

TK: Plan and budget. Especially if you desire to travel multiple times in a year, you don’t want to splurge on one ‘vacay’ and not be able to afford the next trip or to come back from a trip feeling like you’re broke. We usually buy our tickets early in the year, and try not to make any last-minute trips, because they will be costly. We also list out the activities/ restaurants we want to visit, and how much we would like to spend each day. We look at being in a new place as if we’re at home – would you spend $300 per day in your city? Neither would we.

TES: Top 3 travel essentials

TK: First aid kit (I was sick when I traveled to Cuba and completely forgot these things happen. Thankfully, one of my friends on the trip brought medicine that literally saved me! She was prepared, so now I take my kit everywhere I travel. It includes medicine, bandages, burn cream, bug spray, etc.)

–       Universal International Travel Power Adapter – you don’t want to forget this! I mean, how would you document your trip if you’re not fully charged?

–       Duffle bag – We usually don’t check-in our bags for 2 main reasons; 1, we don’t want any issues with lost bags/ don’t want to wait at baggage claim, 2, we usually visit multiple countries in one trip. A duffle bag seems small, but trust me, it’s cost effective and makes you pack what you need.

TES: The best place you have travelled to and why?

TK: This is always a tough one to answer because every place is so different and has something unique about it. BUT if we had to choose one destination, it would be Barcelona. There’s so much history there, as one of the oldest cities in the world – we found ourselves continuously learning during our first visit. The blogs were right when they said, “there is no shortage of museums and tapas”, It was impossible to see/eat everything in one trip. The night life – something we underestimated. We went out around 11:30 PM and that was still too early, they literally party till the morning. We couldn’t hang but enjoyed the few hours we were out.

Château de Versailles

TES: Worst travel experience?

TK: While we loved travelling to Belize, and would go again, hands down! We didn’t do enough research on the Airbnb we booked, which made the trip less fun. Overall, we enjoyed the trip, made the most of the lodging experience, and decided to take our time when choosing a place to stay moving forward.

TES: Where have you been inspired to travel to lately and why?

TK: Lately, we’ve both been excited about visiting Bali! We’ve never been to Indonesia, so why not? The Bali aesthetic and artistic vibe is to die for! We’ve seen some amazing beaches and have heard about the delicious traditional meals. Our company is rewarding top performers a free trip to Bali next year (pray for us).

TES: Favourite travel blogger?

TK: Victoria Alao and Journeyfootprints (we met the while visiting NY earlier this year and they were the sweetest!)
